Top 5 Reasons Why League of Legends is so popular

League of Legends is currently one of the most popular online games available. If you want to know the reasons behind its success dig in and read more.

5. Similar to WoW (Graphic, Champions)

Both LoL and WoW have similar, cartoony, colourful graphics, and let’s face it; the champions don’t have many details in-game. Even on max graphic settings both games don’t look particularly good. But the resemblance is going far further: A lot of champions are shamelessly copied from certain WoW specs/classes (nothing wrong about that WoW is taking everything good from other games as well), and the masteries and runes seems strangely similar to gems/talents, so any WoW player who is starting to play LoL will quickly find a lot of familiarities he or she can relate to.

4. Easy to pick up, relatively easy to master

Generally MOBA games are easy when you contrast them with FPS, RTS or MMO arenas. While having the most resemblance to last genre, as you have to proper position yourself in teamfight, there is a lot less abilities your hero posses. So the only thing to be worried about is last hitting and map awareness. Riot goes even further to make  LoL even more casual, when compared to other titles within the MOBA Genre: Creep denying and gold loss upon death were cut out from the game to make it more forgiving and noob friendly.

3. Plenty of champions and map to choose from

The variety of 90 champions and 3 maps easily prevents casual person from getting bored over the game. When you get bored with one hero, you simply buy and play another one to experience his or her abilities and play style. Moreover a lot of champions can be and should be built in different ways, depending on the composition of your team and the enemies team composition. If you add to this to the choice of  3 maps, which you should play and build your hero in alternative manner, the game itself could be hardly called dull or lacking of content.

2. Huge money to win on tournaments

The League of Legends Season Two prize pool is 5 million dollars! That amount of money surely does convince the ‘wannabe pro-gamer’ kind of people to invest they time in getting better at League of Legends. As you play League of Legends you quickly discover the game is hardly playable as solo player, so you will drag your friends into it in order to make arranged team, which can greatly improving your chances of winning and competing for grand prizes.

1. Free to play

I think this is the most compelling factor for majority of people. Free to download and free to play in one package. On top of that you can obtain every power and champion in game without spending a single penny. However if you suffer from Pokemon Syndrome (gotta catch ‘em all) you might want to say goodbye to any social life or get ready for paying for champions from your pocket, because every new champion cost 6300 ip (which is about 85 games played, each taking 40 minutes on average) or 975 rp (about 5 pounds).

If its red its dead and you prolly didn’t peel well enough and ran like a panzy!

by far the top reason why lol is palyed is because its a major casual game= any noob can play the game. the skillcap is not even comparable to dota/hon. games that attract the casual players are games that succeed.

    • Curoch

I do not agree with this point, i admit lol is alot more noob friendly than hon or dota, but the shear amount of skill shots and “OMFG WHAT A SHOT” moments you can have lol make it a much more interesting version. HONs gameplay is superior in its speed and fluidity but overall it lacks those big skill based team fights and comes down to mainly farm/hero selection.

Not to mention in HON the community is the worst of any online game ive played and makes you wanna strangle some 12 year olds through your screen.

LoL and HoN communities are exactly the same = worst communities in gaming ever. It’s mostly because of heavy-teambased, frantic game play and also because they are both free to play. You don’t see that amount of trolls/kids/retards in let’s say Starcraft because you have to pay 40 euros and it takes actually skill to play.

        • Sascha Heinisch

Dunno, I think it’s more because of the fact the Starcraft Community has many fans from the first installation of the game and they matured. Even though the DotA 2 beta has been largely exclusive for a long time I’ve actively participated, it’s actually much worse than playing LoL. People flame a lot more and the amount of times you are down a player because of rage quits is incomparable.

“games that attract the casual players are games that succeed” Sad but true, although catering to low skill players never worked out well for any game in the long run. It’s good for developers wallets though.

Tbh, I like both games but I totally agree with LoL being insanely noob friendly.
Compared to the 2 others mobas, you loose a LOT of features that make the game demanding more skills.
For example : no denies, no creep block, no creep stacking, no runes control, no trees juking, no juking+escape teleport, less mobility items, too powerful towers that limit early ganks moves…..

  • Sascha Heinisch

I think the math on your games played to obtain a 6300 champion is a little bit exaggerated given the bonus of the day wins and what they make up for the majority of the player base. 50-60 games is much more realisitic.

Check out bloodline champions, the most skill-based non-stop action arena game, free to play, with a lot of characters and maps designed for intense 3v3 (easy and fast to play)

  • Mebored

i wouldn’t say plenty of maps

  • tl;dr

I’ve tried Lol on 5 different occasions and I still don’t understand why people play it.
1- The matchmaking system is atrocious (on 3 different instances it took 15 minutes to find a match and on 1 it took 45 minutes).
2- The combat is spam happy by design (many characters are built to use one specific series of moves in a specific order, and anything else is just plain ineffective).
3- Because of the sheer amount of high ranked players who study the game to a fault, and the nature of the combat mentioned above, there’s a severe problem where experimentation and innovation is punished and repetition is rewarded.
4- The item shop, skills, and characters are very hard to initially grasp due to the player being bombarded with obscure and unnecessary amounts of information.
5- This isn’t a problem with Lol but with large gaming communities in general, *why is it that when something becomes absurdly popular and people flock to it is it that players become jerks. Several of the games I played one player would be lagging behind a little and he would receive death threats and comments telling him to uninstall the game, like it or not a player base is made of good and bad players, and as it stands joining the Lol community now is about as pleasant as pouring sulfuric acid down your ear (this is of course not counting the few instances where players would be actually helpful and friendly).
In conclusion if you like this game that fine but do not claim that it’s ideal there are many basic problems here. (If you sincerely like this game and aren’t an asshole please continue to enjoy your entertainment).
    * = rhetorical statement.
