http://i.imgur.com/If4PDGD.jpg

If you didn’t already see it, it premiers again tomorrow at midnight at www.twitch.tv/Hydramist. Watch it.

Most of my work I try to edit and make perfect, but I think this is best just being the gut reaction and raw. Maybe not. But yeah.

Hydra. Ryan. Is an inspiration as a person, not just a player.

I never thought I would watch a PvP video and ever feel anything beyond the point of “Damn, now I just wanna do some arenas.” I’m sure not many of us did, but somehow it happened. It felt awesome to get the opportunity to write for Hydramist, but I never thought I’d feel like this about it, like it was an opportunity beyond just something cool in a video game.

Hydra, the reason most of us use this website, has really managed to create a movie that was more than just a montage of him playing, it’s bizarre to really talk about World of Warcraft with words I would normally use to describe books I’ve written about at University, or people, but truly. Hydra 11 is a masterpiece, it appeared to be more than just a byproduct of turning fraps on every now and then and playing a video game. It became something more, at least, whether intended or not.

We spend a lot of our time telling ourselves “It’s just a game”, and it is – but it’s filled with real people. And just like real people form relationships with sports stars, coworkers, people who frequent the same bar as you and so on, we form a relationship with the people in the game, whether we know them directly or not. For anyone who has been a long term fan of Hydra, Hydra was a part of your experience in World of Warcraft – I’m sure plenty of you have seen his earlier videos.

Then streaming arrived, and you got to be there, spend time with him or just watch him, and Hydra became even more involved with your experience in World of Warcraft. I’ve had the pleasure to get to know Hydra a little more recently, but before I was just like any other person who watched his videos, and I don’t think I ever looked at him as a Person, rather than a player, until very recently and even more so after watching premier of Hydra 11 this evening.

I am not Hydra’s best friend, I am not someone who regularly spends time with him, I’m not even a priest player, and I’d even go as far as to admit that I haven’t watched every Hydra movie from beginning to end. I am just someone who is fortunate enough to post his thoughts on his website and occassionally talk to him, but I care about Hydra as a person. The moment the angelic music came on for the outro, I felt as though I was watching a real movie and the end credits were rolling down, that moment when you feel like you’ve learnt something from the Movie. All I learnt was that Hydra was a person, but Ryan, is truly someone who impresses me as a person – he impresses us all as a player, of course, but he impresses me as a person. I did not think I would ever see someone who reeps in the public attention that Ryan does who really appreciated every single 1 that made the 2,000+ that watch him on twitch, but I really think he does.

While constantly burdened by his “Chronic Bitch Face” (his words, not mine), or while cursing, or even while blurting out explicit words directed at certain classes, we all continued watching. Because he’s something different. I don’t think the other popular twitch streamers would be as lucky to hold onto the attention of people without making sure their every facial hair was perfectly placed to entertain the viewers. But we watched, why? For the rare smile? For the laughs? Sure. But because Hydra was, and is, something a little different. What that is, is he’s a real person. He’s Ryan. And I’ve never felt more certain that someone really appreciates the people who contribute to his life. Whether you donate regularly, or once. Whether you watch him regularly, or just every now and then. Whether you’re active in the chat, or not. I’m pretty sure he cares.

And we do too.

I, like all of you, hope that Ryan goes on to do something great in whatever it is he does at University, and in later life. I hope he finally gets the girl he’d name a WoW character after, even if it was a dwarf female (You totally deserve a nelf/belf though, you sexy hunk of man, you). I hope, despite all the annoyance he’s had, he doesn’t look back on his time spent on World of Warcraft and think “What could I have been doing while I was busy playing that?”, because I hope that just like his time on WoW has made me come to appreciate that all players are people too, his time on WoW helped him figure out who he was in some way shape or form, and helped him become whatever he will become.

It’s not the end of Hydra, yet, apparently. But, if it is the end of his movies, he couldn’t have ended it on a better note. With a movie that rivals 7 amongst the most hardcore of fans, and some strange underlying tone that brings World of Warcraft out to be more than a game. He’s outdone himself. And in a way that I can’t quite understand, has created a community that are substantial.

Please continue to support him while he, and WoW, is still around. He appreciates you as people, not just numbers on his view counter. Just as we appreciate him as Ryan, not just Hydra.

There is a little Hydra in all of us (There are a lot of jokes I really want to make, I mean, he’s even a priest) – but there is a little of us all in Hydra too.

Ryan, while you tear up, we do too.

We all hope you go far.

So Hydra 11 is nearing completion to the point where i can set a Premiere date on my stream at http://www.twitch.tv/hydramist to 18th (Saturday evening at midnight GMT ) and 19th (Sunday evening at midnight GMT)

I also want to take this opportunity to thank everybody that has ever supported me/the stream by donating and announce that i will also be including anybody who has ever donated over €5 in the credits! (People who have donated larger amounts will obviously be placed more prominently!) I’d love to include everyone but there are simply too many generous people out there it seems and the credits would go on forever then! This offer will also extend over the next week and a half or so until the final render is done! So if you want to contribute and get your name added, you still have a chance here!

Some of you may have read Ceon’s post earlier in the week regarding the majority [...]

Some of you may have read Ceon’s post earlier in the week regarding the majority of this, but I felt the desire to write more about the topic.

While at first looking at changes to PvP we all get relatively excited because we hope they’ll be fixing things, I’m worried that their most recent prospective overhaul might not necessarily make things better for people who currently actively PvP and do not PvE.

Please note, that the majority of this post is based on information I had readily available to me. I haven’t been on the PTR yet, and I’m guessing the PvP power numbers will be tweaked on gear, or at least the usefulness of PvP power. Or, as you’ll see, they might have to be.

The Changes

Base Resilience will be set to 65% for all characters level 85 and higher
Resilience will be removed from nearly all PvP gear
Players will still be able to use Resilience gems and enchants
PvP power will remain exclusively on PvP gear
PvP set bonuses that currently provide Resilience will now provide PvP Power
Healers and hybrid-casters will benefit to a greater degree from PvP Power, and Battle Fatigue will increase to make PvP gear superior for healers.
Conquest gear will be increased to item level 496 (up from 493).
Elite gear will be decreased to item level 496. This gear will essentially become a prestige upgrade.
The Big Change: We will be adding an item level ceiling to all gear in unrated Battlegrounds, Rated Battlegrounds and Arenas
All gear with item levels higher than 496 will be scaled down to 496 (Conquest gear item level). This includes even Conquest items that exceed the ilevel ceiling, such as weapons.

To begin with the first two points, regarding resilience being removed from the majority of gear and base resilience increased for everyone:
Quite a lot of us were already gemming for a lot of resilience, I, personally, stacked it. For the majority of classes swapping out too many pieces of PvP gear became unappealing, because even in a full set of resilience gear you would still be gemming to get more resilience. This encouraged us to shy away from PvE gear for the most part, apart from a trinket or so. Now, with the introduction of higher base resilience and the removal of resilience from “nearly all PvP gear” swapping out a PvP piece for a PvE piece seems more encouraging.

But, now we have PvP Power, right? Well, there is math out there regarding the linear returns of PvP power on your damage, but it should also be worth noting that some abilities will scale better with more strength/agility/intellect than they would with PvP power. In particular I believe that to be true for Necrotic Strike for example – and that is just with strength, a stat that primarily just gives it’s user a raw damage boost. For agility, intellect (or spirit, I suppose) classes there is more that can be gained from their raw stat. Agility gives rogues attack power and crit, for example, as well as scaling by 30% from the passive Sinister Calling – I’m sure other classes have similar talents that also give them similar bonuses.

While I don’t see a point in time where having 0 PvP power will be attractive, thus having pure PvE gear will be less encouraging, the majority of PvE gear that has been worth complaining about in the history of WoW comes in the form of Trinkets and Set Bonuses (and occasionally weapons – in the past, at least). So let’s have a look at how swapping out PvP pieces for PvE pieces in these slots will change things.

The PvP Power Trade Off

In a full set of “optimally” gemmed (Resil>PvP Power>Agi) Tyrannical gear, a rogue has 47.39% PvP power

With one of the newly introduced PvE trinkets equipped, my rogue would have 41.83% PvP power.

Swapping to a PvE trinket (perhaps not one of the ones blizzard have specifically targeted with PvP-related nerfs, but believe me, there are still ridiculous and untouched ones) is more than understandable, as while the PvP trinkets passively supply PvP power, on use they fall much further behind some PvE trinkets purely based on the stats they offer.

Swapping out PvP 4 Piece for the newest heroic PvE 2 Piece (Using heroic shoulders and legs, for example, and still keeping PvP 2 Piece), and altering my gemming, my rogue would have 46.68% PvP power.
The above with one PvE trinket, my rogue would have 41.12% PvP power.

Swapping out my PvP 4 Piece for a PvE 4 piece (while keeping the gloves, even though the glove bonus is relatively useless for rogues for other classes it may be more important) lands me with 45.43% PvP power.
The above with one PvE trinket, my rogue would have 39.88% PvP power.

Set Bonuses

While I am ignoring the other stats gained (agi, crit etc) could I really manage to swap out my PvP set bonuses, and are the PvE ones worth it?

I will still be looking purely at rogue, as I don’t really know enough about every other class to definitely say one way or the other.

PvP Set Bonuses:

2 pieces: Whenever you apply one of your Non-Lethal poisons to a target, you also apply Crippling Poison.

4 pieces: Increases your maximum Energy by 30.

As far as the 2 piece goes, it’s pretty damn good. It allows you the option to use Paralytic Poison over crippling, and what caster hasn’t complained at least once about mind numbing poison? That being said, though, if a rogue played with something that had a slow that was just as constant, you could get away with not using crippling poison and still using mind numbing or paralytic. Does anyone miss PvE geared RMPs? You might be in luck.

The 4 piece is a little more needed, especially playing with Elusiveness (You know when rogues run around randomly spamming a skill? That’s feint. -30% damage taken).
During dance, it also stops you from being so energy starved you can’t use abilities. However, without this bonus the only major difference is within the final 2 seconds of shadow dance. That’s still 6 seconds of dance. But just let me get to the PvE bonuses…

Tier 15 Bonuses:

2 pieces: Increases the duration of your finishing moves as if you had used an additional combo point, up to a maximum of 6 combo points.

4 pieces: Shadow Blades also reduces the cost of all your abilities by 40%.

The 2 piece allows your rupture to last 28 seconds instead of 24, Slice n Dice to last 42 seconds instead of 36, and recuperate to last 36 seconds instead of 30. (All values used assume 5 combo points, but that’s not mandatory). Rupture and Slice n Dice are crucial to rogues dealing damage, and it could be argued the maintenance of these abilities make rogues “weak” between cooldowns. This bonus allows that maintenance to be a little less taxing, and, of course means more Eviscerates (That big number you see on your screen before you die.)
Overall, this set bonus isn’t too “Overpowered”.

The 4 piece, however, is where things get interesting. Shadow dance already reduces our Ambush energy cost to 40. Dancing with Blades, a further 40% reduction will likely mean that, well.. The rogue won’t run out of energy. The only thing holding the rogue back will be the GCD. Even using Shadowblades without Dance will result in plentiful eviscerates and spammable damage, and arguably offer rogues a DPS cooldown that is even more scary than it is currently. If I find a PvE rogue willing to help me test some numbers, I could figure out the exact level of “OP” this will be. But for now, I’m figuring pretty OP.

So, what are the other class 4-pieces like? Could you live without your PVP ones? And are there any ridiculous 2-piece (or 4-piece) bonuses? Let me know in the comments.

Blizzard is changing Borrowed Time in 5.3 to:

Borrowed Time now reduces the cast time or channel time of your next Priest spell within 6 sec by 15%, rather than granting 15% haste for 6 sec.

Which means Discipline Priests will no longer be able to gain Borrowed Time and have the effect remain while casting instants to provide a lower GCD. Additionally the ability to cast Penance followed by a casted spell and have both spells benefit from Borrowed Time will no longer be possible in 5.3. Instead Borrowed Time will be consumed by the first channelled or casted spell to be used after the buff is gained.

This isn’t a major change to Disc, but the benefits of this spell have been present since it was implemented at the start of Wrath of the Lich King and Blizzard has, quite questionably, waited until now to change it.

This reason I bring this change up is because the reasoning for the change is particularly humours:

Not really a nerf. It only affects cast time heals now. It affected instants before, but many players didn’t understand how.

Many players didn’t understand how. Right… It’s been in the game since Patch 3.0.2. I guess they’ve been “keeping a close eye” on the matter since then.

In other news, we have this in regards to Atonement been reduced to heal for 80% of the amount of damage:

That guts disc’s offensive pressure in PvP, one of few things it’s actually good at.

Oh, my bad. We like Disc being able to hit decently hard. But you should still choose to heal sometimes.

Do you think Ghostcrawler actually believes Discipline Priests make use of Atonement in PvP? Or that Disc hits “decently hard”?

Keep the jokes coming Blizzard.

On a positive note, 5.3 is shaping up to have some good overall changes. What are your thoughts so far?

Issues: All priests significant healing comes from spells with a cast time aside from prayer [...]

Issues:

All priests significant healing comes from spells with a cast time aside from prayer of mending.

all instant spells and cooldowns are ‘stalls’ in the hope that you will get to a point where you can ‘stand and cast’ to regain hp for your team (aside from swap but you still have to do the majority of the raw healing at some point). Compare this to other healers cooldowns such as NS, healing tide, tree form (instant regrowths) etc.

I agree that disc is supposed to be the ‘offensive utility healer’ but right now the offensive style literally just comes from ‘stay ahead on healing and absorbs or lose’ We lack offensive capabilities we’ve had in the past such as double offensive dispel (big one), significant damage (the game has changed, you cant cast as much now due to instant cc so hard to fix this without making things overpowered). mana burn removal was probably for the better but we gained nothing to compensate.

Disc priests worst aspect right now is lack of raw healing output.

no other healers have to stand and cast anywhere near as much as disc priests, this is what makes glyph of penance so powerful.

Inner focus was our “top people off” with pom->greater heal with 3 stacks. no longer tops off, have to cast again.

The main issue with the divine aegis is it actually nerfs our raw healing output, not even considering the absorb (only the healing portion).(See data below) However lets consider the absorb, people are switching targets in pvp a lot, this means that often the absorb you get from a crit is wasted, because they could choose to never hit the absorb, this is fair enough if you choose to use a spell such as power word:shield, but to implement our raw healing with this kind of ‘risk’ factor seems fairly ridiculous, no matter how low our crit % is. It can mean that a target is not topped whereas if the crit had been a heal, the target would have been full hp, this just means you need to cast again.

Recommendations:

(NOTE: not asking for every single one of these changes, please be aware im not looking for disc priests to be made OP. I’m simply suggesting various ideas i’ve had/heard of)

Psyfiend is a poorly designed joke of an ability, its time to admit ok it was a cool idea, it didnt work out, its too random and unskilled and put silence there instead (disc is the only healer without an interrupt – if you count typhoon, this gives priest some offensive capability back and slightly nerfs shadow and rng fears.

Remove archangel, it’s lackluster and not really a ‘fun’ mechanic that people literally just macro infront of big heals and spirit shell, instead replace it with something that can ‘consume’ your absorb on a target and make it a heal. This would fix the issue of having to stand and cast so much while at the same time requiring the player to actually have to make a choice when to use it.

Add visual effect for divine insight proccing for disc, sick of having to use an addon for it that bugs out every time i want to respec i arena causing a /console reloadui to be needed.

I feel like our damage is where it should be based on the current meta/playstyle, if any offensive ability were to be added it would come in the form of double offensive dispel.

Make desperate prayer targettable, right now nobody takes it because spectral guise is way better.

Look into bringing back old phantasm for discs if no other healing buffs, allowed us to get off 1-2 flashes in times of need without risking insta cc too much.

Shackle baseline but usable on players + a cooldown?

“Furthermore, to go slightly off on a tangent, Blizzard should consider making Divine Hymn baseline for Disc Priests, but offset this change for PvE by making it share a cooldown with Power Word Barrier.”

I was thinking as well with MD, What if they made the glyph baseline for disc and holy. Would that nerf shadow enough?

On PTR, 38k heal – 45k shield = 83k overall

That is something like a 25% nerf when you crit?

The latest patch 5.3 PTR changes have just been released and the PvP changes are very interesting:

All characters now have a base Resilience of 65%.

Resilience has been removed from most PvP gear.

Season 13 Tyrannical gear had their item levels increased to ilevel 496, up from ilevel 493.

Season 13 Tyrannical Elite gear had their item levels decreased to ilevel 496, down from ilevel 512.

Battlegrounds, Rated Battlegrounds, and Arenas now have an ilevel cap. All gear will be scaled down to ilevel 496.

There was a tweet earlier today from Blizzard hinting at a plan to fix the disparity between PvE and PvP gear:

We have a plan. It should also help with the fact that you can upgrade 5.3 PvE gear but not PvP gear.

This must be that plan. This looks somewhat interesting. People who solely do PvE will be able to enter PvP in their raid gear, but it’ll be scaled down to have similar power to the relevant PvP gear. It’s possible they plan for the presence of PvP Power on PvP gear to make said gear more powerful than PvE gear overall. The fact resilience won’t be removed from gear entirely will also aid in this department, especially if set bonuses remain. It might be present on a few offset items or perhaps simply trinkets to make sure PvP trinkets are stronger than their PvE counterparts. This is pure speculation at this point.

Blizzard has stated a blog post with additional information and an explanation for the reasoning behind these changes will be available very soon.

Additionally:

New Arena: Shado-Pan

Gladiator hopefuls have a new location to test their mettle amidst the Kun-Lai mountain tops, in the training grounds of the powerful Shado-Pan. Players must make use of the looming tiger statues and fenced platforms to gain an advantage that will bring victory and glory!

New Battleground: Gold Rush

In the new Battleground situated in the Valley of the Four Winds, the Alliance and Horde continue their war for Pandaria’s precious resources. While the two factions battle for control over mines, they must also protect their own resources from being stolen and turned against them!

Blizzard look to have a solid idea in terms of gear and are working on new content especially for PvP. Simply put: Great stuff!

There were a number of changes to Discipline in patch 5.2.0. The most notable been [...]

There were a number of changes to Discipline in patch 5.2.0. The most notable been two essential glyphs becoming baseline, Focused Will stacking to 30% damage reduction and healing buffs in the form of Penance and the revamped mastery. However, there was one particular change that has inadvertently created issues and injected a number of weaknesses for Discipline Priests in PvP. This was of course the change to Divine Aegis—a passive effect that previously placed a shield on the target of a critical strike, absorbing 30% of the amount healed plus mastery.

Divine Aegis was changed in patch 5.2.0 to:

Divine Aegis now causes critical heals to apply an absorb shield on the target for 100% of the amount healed instead of healing for twice as much. In addition, it grants Power Word: Shield a chance equal to the Priest’s critical chance for the shield to absorb twice as much damage.

This means Disc Priests no longer provide double the amount of healing when they crit unlike the other healers. Instead, a critical heal remains the same as if it hadn’t crit and a shield is placed on the target equal to the amount healed plus mastery. We’ll come on to why this is a weakness in a moment, but let’s look at why this change was implemented first.

The reasoning for this change was highlighted in the Patch 5.2 Class Review:

In raiding particularly, Discipline priests were using an effective but boring “rotation” of casting almost nothing but Prayer of Healing (with a guaranteed Divine Aegis) while using Spirit Shell on cooldown… [We] redesigned Divine Aegis so that Prayer of Heal spamming would no longer be the right answer for every situation.

They went on to say the decision to change the Discipline Mastery to also provide plus healing was to keep mastery competitive with critical strike chance.

This suggests Blizzard believed Discipline Priests, prior to the Divine Aegis change, to be viable PvE healers—though perhaps somewhat overpowered with Prayer of Healing—and PvP wasn’t a factor when the decision to implement this change was made. They did at least consider the implications of Purge by making it so Divine Aegis can no longer be dispelled, but there are other problems with this change in PvP. Indeed, while absorbs provide effective healing in the constant damage environment of a raid fight, the nature of health pools in PvP is vastly different.

Why it’s a Problem

Of course this Divine Aegis can be effective in PvP. For example, where a team mate is taking constant damage or where a critical strike provides a team mate with more effective health, especially immediately prior to the Priest been crowd controlled.

However, topping people off in 3v3 arena is very important and is normally a solo effort unlike in raids. Furthermore, there are a number of regular occurrences in PvP where this proves to be a burden. Rather than explain them in a dull fashion, let’s assume a Priest is playing RMP and take an actual look at some of these occurrences:

Switches: The enemy team is unloading damage on to a Rogue, the Priest begins healing the Rogue and the heal crits topping him to 60% health and providing a Divine Aegis shield. However, the enemy team spots an opportunity and switches to the teams Mage. The Divine Aegis expires on the Rogue and he is still at 60% while the Mage also requires healing.

Forcing the Enemy to go on the Defensive: The Mage and Rogue go on the offensive and force the enemy to play more defensively for a period. The Rogue is sitting at 85% and needs topping off. The Priest hits a critical strike on the Rogue; this brings him to 95% and creates a Divine Aegis shield. This would have topped the Rogue off under the previous mechanic, but under this new model the Priest needs to cast a second heal in order to accomplish this.

Resets: The team goes for a reset, but the Rogue is at 75%. The Priests manages to hit a critical strike and the Rogues health now sits at 85% and receives Divine Aegis. He manages to stealth and opens on the enemy team. The enemy switches to him and the Divine Aegis absorbs a bit of the damage, but expires before been fully utilised.

Essentially there are three major problems and hopefully these, somewhat poor, scenarios highlighted them sufficiently. Firstly, the Divine Aegis component can be partly utilised or completely unutilised as opposed to the consistency of topping off a health pool, effectively wasting resources. Secondly, the lack of 200% critical strikes makes topping off a team mate more difficult. Thirdly, this requires the Priest to cast more heals and, therefore, spend more mana in order to top off a team mate. This third reason is particularly troublesome in conjunction with Disciplines regular poor mana longevity in PvP.

Necrotic Strike vs. Disc

The reasons set out above aren’t the only implications of this change. The interaction of the new mechanic with other abilities, particularly Necrotic Strike proves to be very burdensome for Priests.

The inability of Power Word Shield and Divine Aegis, two mechanics Discipline Priests are balanced around, to count towards the Necrotic Strike saw the ability become very powerful against Discipline Priests specifically. With Renew been lacklustre, Discipline Priests essentially have Prayer of Mending and the glyph of Power Word Shield as their only instant heals and this glyph is no longer taken in Mists of Pandaria. This means Penance and Flash Heal are a necessity to clear Necrotic Strike.

With the 25% casting slow and the addition of Mind Freeze, Strangulate (or Asphyxiate), Ghoul Stun and Death Grip, Necrotic Strike proves especially challenging when casting heals. Furthermore, with the plethora of get out of jail free cards in the form of Desecrated Grounds, Lichborne and Icebound Fortitude, it’s difficult to peel a DK stacking Necrotic Strike. This is without even considering the utility of the DKs team mates. Finally, while it doesn’t clear the Necrotic Strike debuff, the extra survivability Power Word Shield provides has been weakened by the possible presence of a dispel provided by the Glyph of Icy Touch.

However, the Divine Aegis change has intensified this issue and has made a challenging situation a complete nightmare to survive. The lack of double criticals makes clearing the Necrotic Strike debuff much more difficult and requires even more casting. A possible solution to this issue is to make mechanics that absorb damage count towards clearing Necrotic Strike. For example, if a 60k Necrotic Strike was present and a Power Word Shield worth an 80k absorb was cast, the shield would clear the debuff and place a 20k shield on the target.

Possible Solutions to the Divine Aegis Change

The initial suggestion would be the reversion of the change in its entirety and reducing the amount of healing done by Prayer of Healing if it’s too strong in PvE. Indeed, a reversion wouldn’t negatively impact the spec in PvE. However, with Blizzard also redesigning the Disc Priest mastery as a result of this change, it’s hard to imagine them simply reverting it. Therefore, let’s look at some other suggestions of how this change could be maintained, but these new resulting weaknesses extinguished.

In my opinion, the best way to combat these weaknesses would be to add a new ability along the lines of this:

There are two separate versions of this listed and both have their strengths and weaknesses. The version to the left would form part of you’re the normal rotation similar to Prayer of Mending. It wouldn’t increase the effective healing of Disc Priests, but simply provide the class with the ability to somewhat switch back to the old double critical mechanic where required. In fact, an ability like this shouldn’t benefit from Mastery and Grace to prevent it from double dipping nor be capable of a critical strike.

The ability on the right would be a cooldown more akin to Desperate Prayer. The addition of Power Word Shield and the fact it wouldn’t consume either Power Word Shield or Divine Aegis on the target, would provide Discipline Priests with a form of burst healing when required. This could be cast immediately after a critical strike or right after placing Power Word Shield on a target. This should benefit from Mastery and Grace and be capable of been a critical strike.

The version on the right would affect PvE balance by slightly increasing the healing potential of Discipline Priests. However, Discipline does seem to lack effective emergency cooldowns. Indeed, Barrier is still practically useless in PvP and utilising Void Shift (a six minute cooldown) still means you or the target needs healing. In fact, if the Divine Aegis change is reverted, it would still be beneficial to see the ability on the right implemented. Furthermore, to go slightly off on a tangent, Blizzard should consider making Divine Hymn baseline for Disc Priests, but offset this change for PvE by making it share a cooldown with Power Word Barrier.

Conclusion

While in no way intended to tone down Discipline Priests in PvP, the change to Divine Aegis and critical heals has unfortunately had this undesired effect. The difference between health pools and damage in raid environments and rated PvP is vastly different. The constant threat of switches and the necessity to top off team mates makes the Divine Aegis change a burden in PvP. This has also increased the effectiveness of Necrotic Strike, an ability that was already particularly strong against Discipline Priests. While it’s unlikely this change will be reverted, there are ways to maintain this change and this post has attempted to make suggestions.
